Psychological Consultation
We offer specialist psychological consultation in both care home settings and people’s own homes. This service provides tailored support for individuals living with dementia, as well as for their families and professional carers.
Our consultations aim to improve understanding and quality of life by addressing:
- Emotional distress, including symptoms of depression and anxiety
- Responsive behaviours or expressions of distress (sometimes referred to as BPSD – Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia)
- Carer stress and burnout
- Communication and relationship challenges
Using evidence-based models and work collaboratively with families and care teams to develop compassionate, person-centred strategies. Our approach seeks to understand the individual behind the behaviour, recognising that what may appear as challenging is often a response to unmet needs or changes in health and environment.

What to Expect from the Consultation Process
Our consultation process is flexible and can be adapted to the needs of each individual or setting.
A typical consultation includes:
1. Initial Discussion
We begin with a phone or video call to understand the situation, gather background
information, and determine whether a consultation is the right fit.
2. Observation and Assessment
Where appropriate, we visit the care home or home setting to meet the person with dementia,
observe interactions, and speak with family members or care staff.
3. Psychological Formulation
We use structured frameworks (such as the Newcastle Model) to make sense of the person’s
needs, history, environment, and behaviours—creating a holistic understanding of what might
be driving distress or challenges.
4. Collaborative Planning
We provide clear, practical recommendations tailored to the person and their support network.
This may include environmental changes, communication strategies, emotional support for
carers, or approaches to managing distress.
5. Follow-Up and Support
Follow-up sessions can be arranged as needed to review progress, adjust strategies, and offer
continued guidance to family or staff teams.
